Oral hygiene

Oral hygiene is a necessary treatment to remove plaque and tartar from the surface of the teeth in order to keep bacteria levels down.

What are plaque and tartar?

Plaque is a collection of organized bacteria that accumulate on the surface of teeth and can cause damage such as tooth decay or periodontal disease. With the mineral salts in saliva, plaque calcifies and turns into tartar, a very hard mineralization that can no longer be removed by the toothbrush, but must be removed by the professional. Plaque and tartar can cause diseases such as tooth decay or periodontitis.

Who performs oral hygiene?

Oral hygiene can be performed by the dentist or dental hygienist with various instruments suitable for removing plaque and tartar above and below the gumline: hand instruments, mechanical ultrasonic instruments, glycine sprays, toothbrushes, and gummies with polishing and fluoride pastes. He also provides guidance on maintaining daily oral hygiene and advice on the best techniques and devices for each patient. The session lasts approximately one hour. In our practice, each patient is evaluated and placed on a schedule of recalls tailored to his or her risk of developing periodontal disease.

Tooth whitening

Whitening is part of the branch of oral hygiene and can also be handled by the hygienist or dentist. It can be performed by various techniques, either at home or professionally, it allows teeth whitening through the use of a carbamide peroxide gel. This technique involves an examination to assess any contraindications such as the presence of restorations that are not whitened or severe tooth sensitivity due to gum recessions or the presence of very pronounced dyschromia that would not be corrected by whitening alone.
